If you are fighting the battle against aging, you have most likely heard about both Botox and Dermal Fillers. They have been used for years for minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and have given millions of patients, both men, and women, confidence to face their worlds knowing that they look their best. They are both non-surgical ways to change one’s appearance for the better, but what exactly are they and which one will you need? Let’s take a closer look at Botox and Dermal Fillers.

Botox

Botox is a treatment for fine lines and wrinkles that uses small, regulated amounts of a purified protein to reduce the activity of the facial muscles. This treatment is delivered through a series of injections into the muscles of the face which are responsible for the “expression lines” that we see appearing as we age. Botox works by blocking the nerve signals in the muscles around the injection site. When the nerves are blocked, the muscles do not move and without that repetitive movement, certain lines and wrinkles can be softened, reduced, or removed completely.  The effects of Botox treatments last from 3 to 4 months. Each session will take 15 – 20 minutes. , Results will be seen in 3-14 days. Because Botox works only on wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement (the expression lines), it will not work on lines and wrinkles caused by loss of plumpness in the face due to aging or even dramatic weight loss.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers are natural substances that are designed to be injected beneath the surface of the skin to add volume and fullness. One of the most commonly used fillers is hyaluronic acid, which is found naturally in the body and is responsible for the healthy plumpness of the skin. Dermal fillers are also delivered by injection into the areas of concern. Different types of fillers are designed to treat various signs of aging. Some plump up lips, others fill in shallow areas on the face, some decrease the wrinkle under the eyes, and others can even soften the look of scars.  For a full list of dermal fillers used at Skinatomy Laser Clinic, click here and read about them. Treatment time is similar to that of Botox in that you can expect to spend 20-30 minutes in the doctor’s office depending on the number of areas being treated. Fillers can last from 12 to 18 months or even longer, making them a favorite of many patients.

The Bottom Line

To summarize, Botox limits the movement of the muscles that are responsible for creases and wrinkles that are caused by facial expressions and the results last 3 – 4 months. Dermal fillers are substances that fill in and plump up areas where the patient has lost volume and smoothness. The results from fillers can last from 6 – 18 months, depending on which type is used. Patients have experienced great results with both Botox and dermal fillers and both are safe and effective ways to improve your overall appearance. In fact, most patients receive a combination of these two products to achieve the perfect look that they are hoping for. The best way to see which is best for you is always with an in-person consultation.

” I was amazed with how quick and easy it was to get Botox. I booked a consultation and made a quick decision as there was a black Friday sale. I didnt realize the Botox would be administered on the spot. The staff were very friendly and approachable. Amazing and quick service. I look forward to continuing my treatments at Skinatomy. 🙂 ” *
