What Can PRP Be Used For?

PRP or platelet-rich-plasma is a substance that is used to promote healing. The liquid in the blood is called plasma, while the platelets are solid. Platelets help the blood to clot, making them vital for healing wounds. Platelet-rich plasma is plasma in which there is a higher concentration of platelets than the other components of blood. These platelets stimulate collagen production which helps to provide elasticity to your skin and to restore volume.   Physicians and scientists together have developed many great uses for PRP. Two of the PRP treatments used most frequently here at Skinatomy Laser Clinic are Vampire Facials and PRP Hair Restoration.

The Vampire Facial

A Vampire Facial is a procedure that involves using your own blood to improve the skin on your face. In a typical treatment, your blood is drawn and then spun in a centrifuge machine to separate out the blood platelets from the plasma. The platelets contain proteins and other growth factors that will stimulate collagen production. Collagen helps to provide elasticity to the skin as well as helping to restore volume. This, in turn, gives the skin a more healthy, youthful look. In a Vampire Facial treatment, the platelet-rich liquid will be topically applied to your face during and after micro-needling.

Microneedling is a treatment for fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars that stimulates the production of the skin’s own collagen and elastin. It does this through the use of a hand-held device that is applied to your skin. This device contains a number of microneedles that will puncture your skin to create tiny, controlled “tunnels”. Once this is done, your body will take over in order to heal your skin and will produce new collagen and elastin to heal and fill in those spots. The addition of your body’s own plasma-rich-platelets will further speed the healing process by supplying additional growth factors to your skin.

PRP Hair Restoration

PRP Hair Restoration is another innovative procedure that uses your body’s own platelets to trigger hair regrowth.  These growth factors and proteins stimulate cellular repair and rejuvenation. Collagen production is stimulated as well as the formation of new blood vessels.  The high concentrations of platelets in plasma cells help promote hair growth by prolonging the growing phase of the hair cycle. The plasma is combined with growth-activating serums and injected into the scalp where hair loss has occurred. This helps repair blood vessels, promotes cell growth, and stimulates collagen production. Patients usually receive injections monthly for three months, then have follow-up treatments every three or four months for two years. The injection schedule will depend on the patient’s specific needs. Most patients see decreased hair shedding, followed by regrowth, and increased hair length.
